Caden Marshall | ASL Interpreter

My ASL Journey…

Back in high school, I found myself in need of language credits to graduate. None of the spoken language options appealed to me, so I turned to my Hard of Hearing neighbor and Civics teacher, Elizabeth Blair York, a significant figure in my life. I asked if she could tutor me in ASL, and she not only agreed but also initiated an ASL class at my high school co-op. That's where my fascination with American Sign Language began.

I dove into ASL college classes at institutions like Harper College, College of Dupage, Columbia College Chicago, and more recently, The Catie Center at St. Bernadine University. Guided by exceptional teachers like Peter Cook, Elke Weinbrenner, Adam Wazilewski, Krystle Conrad, Crom Saunders, Vyron Kinson, and others, I honed my skills in ASL and interpreting. Their influence set the stage for a career that's dynamic, challenging, and deeply fulfilling, allowing me to actively contribute to this incredible community.

During my college years, I embarked on a double major in both Musical Theatre and ASL Interpreting, which led me to cross paths with Joshua Castille. Our collaboration began when Josh, directing The Little Mermaid with Music Theatre Works, needed interpreters. Assigned by my college, I, along with a couple of peers, became his interpreters for rehearsals. It was during this time that Josh and I found a unique connection. After a few weeks, he invited me to be his personal interpreter. Since obtaining my license, I've had the privilege of joining him in various cities such as Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, Wisconsin, Washington DC, and more. Together, we've collaborated with esteemed organizations like Deaf Spotlight, The New York Times, 54 Below, American Players Theatre, and beyond.

In addition to my role as Josh's interpreter, I work as a Nationally Certified freelance ASL interpreter in the vibrant Chicagoland area. Furthermore, I work as an actor, director, dramaturge, and influencer.
